Born: c1940. Utopia Northern Territory
Known as: Aileen Mbitjana, Eileen Mbitjana
Language: Anmatyerre
Dreaming's: Anwekety or Conkerberry (Bush Plum), Awelye (Women's dreaming)

Aileen is one of seven children of the famous Utopian artist Minnie Pwerle. Her father "Motorcar" Jim Ngala was also an accomplished artist. Her half-sisters Betty Mbitjana (Mpetyane) and Barbara Weir are both acclaimed artists.

Aileen was involved in the batik movement in Utopia in the 1970s and in the 1980s started working with acrylic on canvas.

Her upbringing was spent in the traditional way; hunting and gathering bush tucker.

When she married; they moved to Lake Nash and had 3 daughters; Chrystaleen, Anndrea and Vivianne.

Aileen designs tell the stories of the Bush Plum from her father's country (Ahalpere). She also paints Awelye (women's ceremony/body paint). The term 'Awelye' encompasses not only the painted designs on the body but also holds a more expansive significance, encompassing the entirety of a ceremony and the rich body of knowledge that accompanies it.

This painting can be hung vertically or horizontally.

This painting was purchased directly from Aileen and a gallery certificate of authenticity will be provided.
