BAMBATU CAMPBELL NAPANGARDI

BAMBATU HAS SIGNED THE PAINTING

REF#BCN28

Born: Early 1940’s. East of Kiwirrkura, Western Australia
Language: Pintupi
Dreaming’s: Women’s Ceremony

Bambatu grew up in the bush living a traditional life with her family.
Whilst in Balgo she met Dinni Campbell Tjampitjinpa whom she married and had six children.

Dinni’s older brother Anatjari Tjampitjinpa was one of the original artists painting in Papunya. He watched the old men painting in the 1970s and assisted his brother and by doing so gained valuable experience.

Bambatu was an apprentice to Dinni for many years.  Sadly, Dinni passed away in 2000 whilst in Alice Springs.

The skills and techniques she learnt from her husband and by watching the old men paint is now applied to her own paintings.

Her paintings traditionally depict the women’s stories of her ancestors, including women’s ceremony, from the paths they travelled across their land, the various land formations, including the concentric circles which represent waterhole’s. The parallel dotted lines are the paths which they travelled. The dotting techniques show body paint design’s, and many other traditional symbols can be seen in her work.

Bambatu’s daughter Christine Nangala is now her apprentice.

Eventually the dreamtime stories will be passed onto Christine and so the stories and techniques are passed down.

Her talent has been recognised by collectors worldwide.

This painting was purchased directly from Bambatu and a gallery certificate of authenticity will be provided with the sale.
