Lindsay was a respected senior Anmatyerre man and cultural leader from Ilkawerne (El-go-an-na) in the Utopia region, northeast of Alice Springs. In his early years he worked on stations as a stockman. A quiet but powerful presence within the Utopia movement, Lindsay was among the few male artists working alongside the women who brough this region to international attention. Beginning with the Utopia batik movement in the late 1970s where he was one of the only men involved. He transitioned to acrylic on canvas in the late 1980s, developing a distinct visual language that remained deeply grounded in culture, country and Law.

Lindsays's paintings carry the weight of knowledge passed through generations. As a senior Law man, he held the authority to depict important ceremonial themes and stories connected to his country. His works are characterised by strong, rhythmic compositions, often centered around sacred sites using traditional iconography such as concentric circles and linear forms to map country, story and spirit.

His palette is unmistakable ochres of blush, warm earth, white and golden clay tones layered over subtle grounds creating works that feel both grounded and luminous. Lindsay often worked with a restrained yet deeply considered use of colour, allowing the story to sit quietly but firmly within the canvas. His connection to family and community remained central throughout his lifel he was married to Mavis Petyarre, with whom he raised three daughters.

More than an artist, Lindsay painted to teach, to hold and pass on knowledge to younger generations and to ensure the continuation of culture. His works are held in significant collections across Australia and internationally, and continue to be sought after for their strength, clarity and cultural depth. Each painting stands as a reflection of country, ceremony and a lifetime of custodianship.

This painting was purchased directly from Lindsay and a gallery certificate of authenticity will be provided with the sale.
