Known as: Polly Nangala, Polly Ngale, Polly Nelson Nangala, Polly Nelson Ngale, Polly Nungala, Polly Ngal
Language: Anmatyerre / Alyawarre
Dreaming’s: Awelye (women’s ceremony and body paint designs) & Bush Plum (Arnwetky)

Polly Ngale (c.1940s–2022) was a highly respected artist from the Utopia region of the Northern Territory, recognised for her refined and culturally grounded practice.

She came from a strong artistic lineage, alongside her sisters Lena Skinner Ngale and Kathleen Ngale, and her brother Johnny Skinner — all established artists of the Utopia movement. Polly began her artistic journey during the Batik movement of the 1970s, a pivotal time that saw many Utopian artists translate cultural knowledge into contemporary mediums. She later transitioned to acrylic on canvas, where her work developed a distinctive clarity and balance.

Her paintings are deeply connected to Country and culture, often depicting themes associated with Bush Plum and Awelye (women’s ceremony). Through her work, Polly expressed the continuation of knowledge passed down through generations, particularly women’s ceremonial practices and body painting designs.

Her work has been exhibited both within Australia and internationally, and she is regarded as one of the significant artists to emerge from Utopia. Her paintings are held in collections around the world and continue to be sought after for their quiet strength and cultural integrity.

In her later years, Polly continued painting despite severe loss of eyesight, maintaining a profound connection to her practice until her passing in 2022.

This painting was purchased directly from Polly and a gallery certificate of authenticity will be provided with the sale.

This painting can be hung vertically or horizontally.
