Gary was adopted at a young age and only reunited with his aboriginal family in his twenties. He lived in South Australia and the Northern Territory, where he crossed paths with Lily Campbell Napangardi, a celebrated artist who would later become his wife. Nowadays, Gary splits his time between Victoria, South Australia, and the Northern Territory, where his biological family lives.
 
Inspired by the Dreamings of Water that traverse the land during the rainy seasons, Gary's artistic focus lies in capturing the essence of lightning, storms, and waterholes scattered across the terrain.
