Isobel Hagan Nungarrayi, a distinguished Anmatyerre artist and current resident of Yuelamu (Mt Allan), was born in 1961 into the Anmatyerre tribe. She is the daughter of Immanuel Rutjinama Tjapaltjarri (dec), a Lutheran pastor raised in Hermannsburg. The heritage of Isobel is deeply rooted in the history of Aboriginal communities, many of which were originally established as missions.
Hermannsburg, where Isobel's father was ordained, was also the home of the renowned artist Albert Namatjira, known for his watercolor depictions of the desert landscape. Albert Namatjira played a pivotal role as one of the first recognized Aboriginal artists.
Isobel is the granddaughter of Gwoja Tjungarrayi, a respected elder and lawman of the Walpiri-Anmatyerre people. She belongs to a lineage of artists prominent in the western desert art movement. Her uncle, Clifford Possum Tjapaltjarri (dec), was a highly acclaimed artist, and her family includes other accomplished painters such as Gabrielle Possum Nungarrayi and Michelle Possum Nungarrayi, along with uncles Tim Leura Tjapaltjarri and Cassidy Tjapaltjarri (both dec).
Tim Leura and Clifford Possum Tjapaltjarri were among the pioneering Papunya Artists involved in the Aboriginal Art movement in the early 1970s. Papunya, approximately 100 kilometers from Yuelamu, saw the movement's beginnings, and some artists from Papunya moved between the two communities. Isobel became involved in painting in 1982, drawing inspiration from the stories associated with the Yuelamu area, including depictions of Goanna and Bush Foods. Her artwork, characterized by similar colors to those used by her famous uncle Clifford Possum Tjapaltjarri, captures the cultural richness of her ancestral lands.
Isobel Hagan Nungarrayi remains an active and engaged member of the Yuelamu community, having served as the President of the Community’s Council. Her artistic contributions, particularly the portrayal of Goanna Dreaming for her country, Mt Allan, reflect a profound connection to her cultural heritage and a commitment to preserving and sharing the stories of her people.
