Dr Pantjiti Mary McLean (c.1928–2023) was one of the most distinctive and respected Ngaatjatjarra artists to emerge from the Western Desert movement. Born in the desert country around Kaltukatjara (Docker River), south-west of Uluru, her life journey carried the deep experiences of traditional desert life, displacement, station work, family separation and cultural survival — all of which became woven into her extraordinary paintings.
Mary began painting professionally in the early 1990s after meeting renowned fibre artist Nalda Searles during the Warta Kutju community art project in Kalgoorlie. While she first worked within traditional Western Desert styles, she soon developed an unmistakably personal visual language filled with movement, storytelling, figures, animals, bush foods and memories of life on Country.
Her paintings are celebrated for their joyful energy and narrative richness. Rather than isolating a single subject, Mary created flowing, multi-directional compositions where people, animals, tracks, waterholes and bush foods coexist together — reflecting the interconnectedness of life, Country and culture. Her work often recalls memories of hunting, gathering, family life and the landscapes of her grandmother’s Country near Docker River and Blackstone.
Beyond her artistic achievements, Mary was a highly respected elder, educator and community figure. In 2001 she was awarded an Honorary Doctorate from Curtin University in recognition of her contribution to Aboriginal art and the broader community.
Pantjiti Mary McLean exhibited widely throughout Australia and internationally, including exhibitions at Fremantle Arts Centre, Boomalli Aboriginal Artists Cooperative, Australia House in London and the Telstra National Aboriginal Art Awards. Her works are held in many of Australia’s most important public collections, including the National Gallery of Australia, National Gallery of Victoria, Art Gallery of New South Wales and the Art Gallery of Western Australia.
Today, her paintings remain highly sought after for their warmth, individuality and powerful storytelling, offering a deeply human connection to Country, memory and lived experience.
