BARRY ENTATA - Central Australian Landscape

There is something quietly commanding about the way Barry Entata places a ghost gum. In this landscape, two pale trunks rise from the red earth and divide the sky the kind of compositional instinct that can't be learned, only felt. Behind them, the familiar blue of the MacDonnell Ranges sits low on the horizon, and the warm desert plain stretches out in that particular way that only someone who truly knows this country can paint.

Barry Entata was born in 1954 at Hermannsburg, Ntaria, in the Northern Territory. He came from a family for whom making art was an act of deep belonging. His father Kenneth Entata was a respected painter in the Hermannsburg watercolour tradition and someone who helped shape that movement not just through his art but through his commitment to country and community. His aunt Irene Mbitjana Entata became one of the better-known Hermannsburg potters of the 1990s.

Like his father before him, Barry was never a painter who sought quantity. He painted selectively, and this is part of what makes his work worth seeking out. Works by him rarely come to market.

This painting was purchased directly from Barry Entata and is accompanied by an Altyerre Aboriginal Art certificate of authenticity.
