BARRY ENTATA
This is a bold, vivid painting, the ranges rearing up in deep cobalt and turquoise, the ghost gums standing tall at left, the ochre earth stretching wide. Where some Hermannsburg landscapes feel contemplative, this one has energy. The ranges don't recede quietly into the distance; they make themselves known.
Barry Entata was born in 1954 at Hermannsburg, Ntaria, and painted within one of the most distinctive watercolour traditions in Australian art history. His father Kenneth was a painter of real significance within the Hermannsburg School, described by scholars as someone who painted to give voice to his deep love of country. His aunt Irene Mbitjana Entata was a well-regarded Hermannsburg potter. Art in this family was never incidental it was how country was spoken of.
Barry did not paint in large numbers. His works are scarce, and this one with its confident colour and strong sense of place is among the more striking examples of his landscape vision.
This painting was purchased directly from Barry Entata and is accompanied by an Altyerre Aboriginal Art certificate of authenticity.
