Born in Yuendumu, a small aboriginal community on the edge of the Tanami desert, 290 km northwest of Alice Springs in the Northern Territory. The community has a fluctuating community between 800-900 people with many indigenous people traveling to visit and stay with their families.

Ben's artistic journey began in this very community, where he discovered his passion for painting. He found his artistic home at the Warlukurlangu Art Centre, an Aboriginal-owned establishment situated in Yuendumu. Here, he embarked on a creative exploration of Jukurrpa, a Warlpiri term for Dreaming, intertwined with the stories of his homeland. These narratives encompass essential aspects of his culture, from sacred sites to bush foods, from the Yankirri (Emu) to the Pampardu (or Pamapadu, meaning Flying Ant/Termite).

Ben's artistic expression takes the form of aerial view paintings created in the traditional Warlpiri style. His work is a masterful blend of dotwork and iconography, where concentric circles symbolize both rock holes and termite mounds (Mingkirri). Among the intricate patterns, the two short black lines surrounded by dots represent the Pampardu, the Flying Ants, or Termites. Emus are known to relish these tiny creatures, and Ben beautifully depicts this relationship in his artwork. The arrow-shaped imagery within his creations represents the footprint of the Emu, as it traverses the landscape, feasting on the Flying Ants and Termites.

Ben's art is not just a visual delight but a profound connection to his cultural heritage and the land he calls home. It's a testament to the enduring traditions and the artistic brilliance that thrives within the Australian Aboriginal communities, especially in places like Yuendumu. His work offers a glimpse into the intricate tapestry of indigenous culture and the natural world that inspires it.

Our introduction to Ben was a true blessing, thanks to his family. During his visits to Alice Springs, he would grace our home with his exquisite artwork.

This painting was purchased directly from Ben and a gallery certificate of authenticity will be provided with the sale.
