Known as: Betty Mpetyane
Dreaming’s: Bush Plum (Anwekety), Women’s dreaming (Awelye), Bush Melon

Betty, the daughter of the late Minnie Pwerle, carried on her mother's artistic legacy. Minnie was a highly acclaimed artist whose creations were in great demand among collectors worldwide. She was also the sibling of the acclaimed artist Barbara Weir and was married to Lena Pwerle's son, Paddy Club.

Betty dedicated herself to painting Awelye, the ceremonial body paint designs for women, which had been passed down to her by her mother. These iconic designs feature fluid curves and vibrant linear patterns, boasting a contemporary and universally appealing aesthetic. Traditionally, these designs were finger-painted onto the breasts and upper body for ceremonial purposes.

In addition to Awelye, Betty also depicted Bush Plum seeds using intricate fine dots and layers of vivid colours. She also worked on Bush Melon Seed paintings, known for their larger, precise dots.

Sadly, Betty passed away in early 2023, leaving behind a rich artistic legacy.

Traditionally once an indigenous person has passed all images are not allowed. We are keeping with this traditions out of respect, therefore the image of Betty does not show her face.

This painting was purchased directly from Betty a gallery certificate of authenticity will be provided with the sale.
