Calvin is from the Yuendumu Community which is situated on the edge of the Tanami Desert approximately 350 kms north west of Alice Springs. This is one of the largest Aboriginal communities in Central Australia which a fluctuating population of 1,000 predominately Warlpiri speakers. Minor groups including Anmatyerre, Luritja, Kukatja and Pintubi.

Calvin started painting with the Warlukurlangu artists Aboriginal Corporate which is one of the longest running most successful Aboriginal owned art Centre in Central Australia.

 

His wife, a Warlpiri woman, Linda Napurrurla Walker is also a painter for the Warlurlangu Artists and is a successful artist in her own right.

 

Calvin paints in the traditional style of dot painting. His works are rich in symbolism and beautifully painted onto his canvas using mainly earthen tones. He has completed numerous collaborative works with his fellow Warlpiri people. Two of those works can be seen hanging in the NSW art gallery.

 

Calvin has also been involved in Native Title Claims with other Warlpiri people and other groups to secure sovereignty of their ancestorial land.

 

This artwork is Goanna Dreaming. The word for goanna in Warlpiri is Wardapi. Not only is the goanna an important source of food for his people but the goanna holds an important place in Aboriginal culture as a symbolic spiritual totem.

 

This painting was purchased directly from Calvin and a gallery certificate of authenticity will be provided with the sale.
