Born: Ltyentye Apurte (Santa Teresa), Northern Territory
Language: Eastern Arrernte
Known as: Denise Doolan
Dreamings: Spirit Beings (Spirit Figures)

Denise Doolan is an Eastern Arrernte artist from Ltyentye Apurte, the community also known as Santa Teresa, about 80 kilometres south east of Alice Springs. Her mother was the late Kathleen Wallace, a highly respected Arrernte artist and one of the original women painters behind Keringke Arts, the community's art centre.

Denise grew up surrounded by painting. Over the years the women of Santa Teresa built a style all their own, known for fine dotting and bold, bright colour, and it is now recognised well beyond Central Australia. Denise paints in that tradition. Her mother gave her permission to paint the stories of the spirit beings, and they became the heart of her work.

She paints with dense, careful dotting, building up rings, lines and figures until every part of the canvas is filled. Her paintings are busy and full of detail, and the closer you look the more you find.

DREAMINGS

Spirit Beings - In Arrernte culture the ancestral spirit beings are part of the country itself. They live on in the land and in the stories handed down through families. Denise paints the spirit beings of her country with the permission of her mother, who passed the story on to her.

With its circular, all over design, this painting can be hung vertically or horizontally.

This painting was purchased directly from the artist and a gallery certificate of authenticity will be provided with the sale.
