GLENDA CAMPBELL
TITLE: GRANDMOTHER'S COUNTRY
GLENDA HAS SIGNED THE PAINTING AND A PHOTO WILL BE PROVIDED
On the back of this large, richly worked canvas, Glenda has written in her own hand:
"This Dreaming is about my grandmother's country as she been growing up back in the old days. The three circles are, one in middle is the fire they use to sit around when she was young girl."
That handwritten note tells you everything this painting is about — memory, country, and the gathering place of women around a fire. The three concentric circles that anchor the composition represent those meeting points, the central one being the fire itself. Radiating out from them are the dotted pathways and flowing lines that map the surrounding country as Glenda's grandmother knew it in her youth.
The palette is bold and warm — deep earth reds, midnight blue and cream white dots — painted with a confident, practiced hand across a substantial canvas. This is not a small work. At 86 x 181cm it commands a wall.
Glenda Campbell was introduced to Altyerre through other artists during a visit to Alice Springs. She paints rarely and speaks quietly about her work, which makes the written story on the back of this canvas all the more precious.
The artwork was purchased directly from Glenda, and comes with a certificate of authenticity.
