JANIE WARD NAKAMARRA

TITLE: COUNTRY

ACRYLIC ON LINEN
120CM X 90CM
JANIE HAS SIGNED THE PAINTING AND A PHOTO OF JANIE WITH HER ARTWORK WILL BE PROVIDED.

REF#JW404

DOB: (c1945-2018)
Language: Pintupi
Dreaming’s: Country, Women’s Ceremony, Minya Tujukurrpa (Women’s creation stories), Wangurnu Rockholes

Janie was born in the Gibson Desert of Western Australia in the Clutterbuck Hills and had a traditional bush upbringing until her later years. In recent years the Patjarr community was formed.

Janie married Tommy Lowry Tjapaltajarri (c1940-1987) who was one of the original Papunya Tula shareholders. They raised children and, much like numerous indigenous individuals, journeyed between communities like Kintore, Docker River, Patjarrr, and Papunya to maintain connections with their extended family.

She painted the stories of her ancestral country, portraying sacred landmarks, women’s ceremony and the profound creation stories handed down through generations.

We were fortunate to meet Janie during her family visit to Alice Springs, where she came to our family home with her exceptional artwork.

This painting was purchased directly from Janie and a gallery certificate of authenticity will be provided with the sale.
