DOB: c1948.  Haasts Bluff, Northern Territory
Known as: Lily Kelly Napangardi, Lily Kelly Napangarti
Dreaming’s: Tali (Sandhills), Awelye (Women’s Dreaming)
Language: Warlpiri

Lily Kelly was born in Haasts Bluff growing up in the bush until the early1960s where her family then moved to the new settlement of Papunya. It was here in Papunya that she began painting with her husband Norman Kelly Tjampitjinpa.

In the early 1980s, Lily and her family moved to Mt Liebig. Here at Mt Liebig (Watiyawanu) she developed her iconic style of depicting the ever-changing sandhills (Tali) of her ancestor’s country. The minimal use of colour and fine dots, varying in size, give a great sense of movement and depth from an aerial perspective.

In 1986, Lily won the Northern Territory Art Award for painting, and the General Category winner at the 20th Telstra National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Art Awards in 2003. In 2006 Lily Kelly Napangardi was named one of Australia’s 50 most collectable artists by the Australian Art Collector Magazine.

She is a highly sought-after contemporary artist whose works are seen in museums and private collections all over the world.

This painting was purchased directly from Lily and a gallery certificate of authenticity will be provided with the sale.
