TITLE: AWELYE
MARGARET HAS SIGNED THE PAINTING A PHOTO OF MARGARET WITH HER ARTWORK WILL BE PROVIDED
REF#MT249
Dreaming’s: Women’s dreaming/Body Paint (Awelye), Bush Medicine, Bush Tucker including Bush Orange
Margaret was a well-known artist who was born in Lake Nash, approximately 570 km east of Tennant Creek near the boarder of Queensland but she spent most of her life in the Utopia Region. Sadly, Margaret passed away in 2008. Her Daughter Marcia Turner Petyarre, also a respected artist continues to tell the stories passed down to her by her mother.
In 1988, Margaret was one of the artists involved in the Summer Batik project which toured locally and internationally and is now a part of the Homes a Court Collection.
Margaret painted various dreaming including Awelye which is women's dreaming. During ceremonies the women would paint designs onto the top half of their bodies. This painting is Margaret's depiction of these designs.
Like many other artists who started with Batik, Margaret went onto to painting with Acrylic on canvas.
Margaret’s works can be found in private and public galleries around Australia and internationally.
In Aboriginal Culture, when a person is deceased they not use the person’s name and all photos (any digital images) are not to be used. Out of respect we do not have any images of Margaret however we have used her name as it would be very difficult to list the painting with no name attached.
This painting was purchased directly from Margaret and a gallery certificate of authenticity will be provided with the sale.
