DOB: c1950-2010. Ikuntji (Haasts Bluff)   Northern Territory
Also spelt: Narabri Nakamarra
Language: Pintupi
Dreaming’s: Country (including rock hole site of Payarrnga, sandhills, sacred sites), women’s body paint designs (women’s ceremony),

Narrabri was born in Ikuntji (Haasts Bluff) which is a small Aboriginal community approximately 230km’s west of Alice Springs.

Her mother, Makinti Napanangka, was a renowned artist who initially painted for Papunya Tula, achieving numerous accolades, including the prestigious Telstra Award and the Member of the Order of Australia for her significant contributions to contemporary Indigenous art. Her sister-in-law, Ngoia Pollard Napaltjarri, is another celebrated painter and recipient of the esteemed Telstra Award.

Narrabri spent several years residing in Ikuntji before relocating to the Papunya settlement, and later to Kintore with her husband, Hilary Tjapaltjarri, and their children.

Her artistic journey began by assisting her famous mother with her artwork, eventually leading to her independent work for Papunya Tula in the late 90s. Initially, her creations were influenced by her mother's style, featuring straight line work illustrating Tali (sandhills) and themes associated with Lupulunga, a sacred site in her mother's country for which she was a custodian. Over time, Narrabri developed her own distinctive artistic style which was celebrated.

Crafted in 2007, this specific artwork reflects the time when Narrabri had started to fully embrace her unique artistic style. Sadly, she passed away in 2010.

This painting was purchased directly from Narrabri and a gallery certificate of authenticity will be provided with the sale.
