Born: Northern Territory - Australia
Known as: Rosalie Morton Napurrula
Skin name: Napurrurla
Language: Warlpiri
Dreaming’s: Country, Ngatijirri Jukurrpa (Budgerigar dreaming), Bush Tucker

Rosalie is from the Aboriginal community of Yuendumu, approximately 290 kms northwest of Alice Springs on the edge of the Tanami Desert.  The community is one of the largest indigenous communities and home to many talented artists who are Warlpiri.

She was given the skin name Napurrurla at birth which is based on the combined skin names of her parents. The skin name given to a child determines the Dreaming’s they are related to as well their relationships and connections to the land and family. The Australian Aboriginal people had a complex system of who could marry which was determined by their skin name. The girls are given Napurrurla and the boys Jupurrurla. The are several different skin names related to the Warlpiri people as well as Nakamarra (female)/Jakamarra (male)

This painting is Rosalie’s depiction of the Ngatijirri Jukurrpa (Budgerigar Dreaming). The budgerigar (also known as budgie) is a small, green native bird found across Central Australia. Traditionally the men would hunt these birds including their eggs.
The painting pays homage to this beautiful bird and its journey across her ancestral lands.

Rosalie was not a prolific painter and has not painted for several years now but her artwork remains celebrated for its remarkable beauty and the stunning intricacy of her fine dot work.

This painting was purchased directly from Rosalie and a gallery certificate of authenticity will be provided with the sale.
