Bush Medicine Leaves: The Story Behind One of Australia's Most Iconic Indigenous Art Forms
Few subjects in Aboriginal art carry as much cultural depth as the bush medicine leaf. A well-documented Dreaming story painted by the women artists of Utopia in Central Australia, Bush Medicine Leaves reflects the profound importance of these plants to traditional Aboriginal life.
The use of leaves in bush medicine has been practised for many thousands of years, serving both physical and spiritual healing purposes. Throughout history, it has been the women of Aboriginal communities who collect and prepare these plants — often harvesting in groups so that older women can pass down their knowledge to the next generation.
The leaves most commonly depicted come from the Kurrajong tree, of which there are some 30 varieties. Women gather the bush leaves, boil them, and mash them with animal fats — such as kangaroo, emu, or goanna — to create a medicinal poultice or paste capable of lasting for many months. The leaves can also be ground and applied to aching joints or placed on the temples to relieve headaches.
When it comes to the art itself, the paintings are as remarkable as the story behind them. Thousands of individual leaves are painstakingly hand-painted one by one, layered with thick brushstrokes in sweeping, swirling patterns that seem to ripple across the canvas. Through clever use of colour, shape, and stroke direction, the works evoke a powerful sense of movement — as though the leaves are drifting on the wind.
Artists represent the leaves as they float to the ground, employing a range of colours to depict the leaves at different stages of the season — because as the plant matures, the leaves change colour and their medicinal properties shift.
The style is credited to Gloria Petyarre of Utopia, who in 1999 became the first female Aboriginal artist to win the prestigious Wynne Prize with her painting Leaves. Her work brought Australian Indigenous art into the realm of contemporary fine art and captured the attention of international audiences.
In painting the Bush Medicine Leaf story, artists pay homage to the spirit of the medicinal plant and encourage its regeneration — so that their communities can continue to benefit from its healing powers. Each painting is therefore not simply decorative; it is an act of cultural preservation, a prayer, and a connection to Country that stretches back tens of thousands of years.
